‘Twas the night before Christmas and all through the forum
Not a creature was stirring, there wasn’t a quorum.
The stockings were hung on the Philco with care,
In the hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be there.
The moderators were nestled all snug in their beds
While visions of vacuum tubes danced in their heads
The new server just hummed with no bugs or old pests
Awaiting Ought Ten with old friends and new guests
So mamma in nightgown and I in my robe
Had just settled down for an old radio show
The Philco was warming and softly it played
Glenn Miller’s old song Moonlight Serenade.
When over the airwaves there came such a clatter
I sprang from the recliner to see what was the matter
Away to the tuner I flew like a rocket
It sounded like a tube fell out of its socket
The noise was so scratchy and the sound from the speaker
Gave me pause to believe I had a capacitor leaker
And then a soft voice so mild and so mellow
I knew it had to be that St. Nicholas fellow
With a miniature transmitter and AM modulation
He was broadcasting his words across my home station
I thought for a while that it must be some trick
But I soon figured out that it really was ol’ St. Nick
The cabinet thundered and shook with his laughter
The old speaker shuddered clear up to the rafters
And he whistled and shouted and called out the names
More rapid than eagles his mighty words came
“Now Zenith! Now Philco! Now Atwater Kent!
“On Truetone! On Farnsworth! And old Lafayette!
“Now Crosley! Now Capehart! Now Emerson, yet!
“On Graybar! On Gloritone and Radiolette!”
From the speaker he shouted with such joy and such glee
That I thought he must be flying in close proximity
With a sleigh full of gizmos St. Nick was afly
To my house direct from Antique Electronic Supply
And then, in a twinkling I heard on the roof
The prancing and pawing of each little hoof
As I turned down the volume and was turning around
Down the chimney St. Nicholas came with a bound
He was dressed all in fur from his head to his foot
And his clothes were all tarnished with ashes and soot
A bundle of radios he had flung on his back
And he looked like a peddler just opening his pack
His eyes, they twinkled like sparkling rectifier
And his cheeks were as rosy as a low-bid E-Bay buyer
His skin was as smooth as antique veneer
And he chuckled and laughed with holiday cheer
The stump of a pipe he held tight in his jaw
And the smoke, it let out like a transformer flaw
He had a broad face and a round little belly
Like under his coat was an old Crosley telly
A wink of his eye and a twist of his head
Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread
He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work
And filled all the stockings; then turned with a jerk
From out of his bag of goodies he took
A box of old tubes and a radio book
A Philco for momma! An SStran for me!
And an armload of double A's "For your grandkids, you see."
And reaching once more Santa did make appear
A completely restorable Zenith Stratosphere.
And before he left on that memorable night
St. Nick said, “Don’t forget what is right.
“Remember the folks that help in your plight.
“To make those old radios glow again in the dark
“The Antique Radio Forum must be a bookmark
“Say thanks to Leigh and to Matthew and to Bill, all our brothers
“And also to Alan and Curt and to Norm and the others
To all of our friends the wide world over
And to Don and Ron in that country down under
“And also to Franzis for help all around
“Don’t forget not to hook yourself to the ground
“And if you really want to make it work
“You gotta say thanks to ol’ Chuckie Schwark
"Remember those who have left us, who have
passed this gone year
"We think of them often and oft shed a tear.
“So keep those old radios playing and bring them to life
“And once in a while give a kiss to the wife.”
He sprang to his sleigh, to his team he gave whistle
And away they all flew like the down of a thistle.
But I heard him exclaim, ere he drove out of sight,
"HAPPY CHRISTMAS TO ALL, AND TO ALL A GOOD-NIGHT!" |
